“I hate my physical therapist.”

*unhhh*

“My therapist hates me.”

*gasp*

“She is a sadist.”

*grunt*

“Just watch and see.”

*ermmm*

“She loves to see me grimace in pain.”

*arrrrgh*

“She says my torture is my own gain.”

*oooof*

“I hate my therapist.”

*ugh*

“Can’t you see?”

*ack*

“Because of this punishment, how can she love me?”

*groan*

Alright, I know what you’re thinking: “Oh my goodness, that poor Aimee! She hates her therapist? What are they doing to that poor child?”

Not quite.

The above is a brief glimpse of a typical moment of rehab. I must add one important factor: Aimee loves her physical therapist.

During each of her physical therapy sessions, Aimee does two hundred crunches in seven minutes. Every ten crunches, Aimee is required to say a complete sentence with each repetition. Hence my rhapsodic poetic rendition, which is basically my take on what Aimee says, based on my discussion with Aimee herself.

At this point I have to pause and ask a simple question. How many of you can do two hundred crunches in seven minutes?

No, making two hundred crunching sounds while eating a bag of Cheetos does not count.

Wait, that’s not all. Aimee also has to do four hundred leg lifts in seven minutes, an untold number of pushups and something else that she calls “planks” and “sideplanks”.

I always thought sideplanks were something you put on your plate to keep the food from falling off when you visited the buffet line. Not the same.

These workouts serve a great purpose for Aimee. She is conditioning her body to be strong enough to shift her weight so that she can maneuver in and out of her chair onto any surface. She’s getting pretty doggone good at it too.

A couple of weeks ago I had an opportunity to buy a nice van with a lift, at a reasonable price, for Aimee. It had a locking mechanism for a wheelchair on the right front passenger side. You want to know Aimee’s reaction?

“No way! I am not going to be chauffeured around town like a handicapped person.”

I was taken aback. I thought she would see value in the van, just as her mother and I did. Where we saw value, she saw dependence. She wants to come and go as she pleases. She wants to drive herself wherever she wants to go, preferably (according to her) in a Prius V.

I bit my tongue. The same young lady who totaled three cars (and a golf cart) when she was whole now wants to drive when she lacks hands or feet? I didn’t say that to Aimee. The simple fact is that between her ears, Aimee is 100%. She knows that she can accomplish anything she wants and that lacking the hands or feet to accomplish such tasks is only a minor inconvenience. She is learning to work around these inconveniences and she is determined that she will prevail. Who am I to tell her any different?

Needless to say, the van ain’t happening.

The workouts are only one illustration of Aimee’s fortitude. The other is her incredible ability to see through the haze that often encompasses many of us in the normal course of our lives. How often do we get so fixated on a goal that we lose sight of the proverbial forest for the trees?

*Hand raised*

Aimee has taught me some valuable lessons this past week. I grew overly concerned over matters that I should never have been concerned about. I wanted to continue to coddle my “vulnerable” daughter and make decisions for her. Stupid me. No one is better able to make decisions about Aimee’s situation than Aimee herself. She is a very bright adult who has incredible clarity of thought and I have gained mountains of wisdom from talking with her. I have learned more about myself and I have become a better person because of it. Let me rephrase that: I have become a better father because of Aimee.

The blessings of our situation continue to pour in. These days I cannot even count the blessings anymore. The ability to learn and grow as a human being is a very important part of the process and I count myself very fortunate in that regard.

Donna and I are humbled constantly by the outpouring of love and support we receive. Letters and cards from well wishers continue to stream to our home and my office. Workers flood to our house to help with the ongoing wing addition and the renovations to our home. They all say the same thing to us: “Thank you for letting us help you!”  That is extremely humbling.

We went to the Antique Mall on Five Forks Trickum Road in Lilburn today and we were presented with a check for a percentage of the day’s sales proceeds. The owners, Jim Underhill and Pat Flynt, commented about what an inspiration Aimee has been to them. Employees and patrons came up to Donna and I and told us about how they were also inspired. One young lady, who shares a common friend with Aimee, said that Aimee has helped her immensely. She held out a device that hung from her neck and said, “I no longer worry about this defibrillator.”

I was stunned. “Are you alright?” I asked.

The young lady broke down in tears and explained that her heart was failing. Twenty four years of age with a failing heart. Donna hugged her and offered consolation that only a mother can give. I took a more logical approach and asked the question that most people would ask in a similar situation.

“Are you on a heart transplant list?”

She wiped a tear from her eye and explained that her situation was not dire enough for a transplant. Although her heart is weak, a person has to be in full failure before such a move can be considered. She added that although doctors told her that she could never have children, she beat the odds and delivered a baby two years ago. She hugged us and  asked us to thank Aimee for her inspirational strength and perseverance. As she walked away, I was the one who was inspired.

Aimee will soon know the full extent of how she has inspired so many people through her experience. She will soon discover the many people who have reached out to her with love and support. I have no doubt that each personal story of inspiration will serve to further strengthen Aimee’s resolve as she strives to better herself. In a world of shared triumphs, none are more meaningful than the triumphs you have shared with Aimee along her road to recovery and rehabilitation. I believe that road will never end, but it will wind through the course of Aimee’s life and your encouragement will only foster more inspiration in return. While I know this will make a sizable impact on Aimee’s life, Aimee doesn’t dwell on it. I think this makes her story even more compelling. Aimee’s focus remains on one thing and one thing only: not being “handicapped”. If hard work is any indication, I think we can all surmise that she is well on her way toward achieving that goal.

Go Aimee! So motivated by your story.

    • 8-1-2012

God Bless you Aimee! I am so very motivated by your courage and determination! My family and I will pray for you.
I also suffered from necrotizing fasciitis in October, 2000. As a result, I feel as though we are kindred spirits.
Keep your chin up and know that I am with you in spirit!

    • 8-5-2012

      Hi Aimee,

I was following your story and admiring how brave you are, and also thinking of how unlucky you were to have caught such a rare disease. Then, 3 weeks ago, I ended up in the ICU with Group A Strep necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome. It started in my foot and spread quickly, and we were not able to determine the exact cause because there were no cuts or scrapes. Initially, I was sent home from the ER with a sprained ankle and the flu, and then I went back to the ER the next day as my symptoms worsened, and diagnosed with cellulitis and then was finally correctly diagnosed and treated. Apparently, necrotizing fasciitis is often wrongly diagnosed, and there is no time for a misdiagnosis because it spreads quickly. Anyway, I had surgery right away to open up my foot, and my doc said that I was remarkably close to dying or losing limbs but I was lucky, and now I expect to recover fully. I am still on antibiotics and morphine, and expect to be for a few more weeks, but I am getting better.

I was in the hospital for 10 days, and there were moments when I was in the hospital and was in such bad shape, and my prognosis was so uncertain that part of me wanted to give up, but I thought of you and your story, and your courage. I just wanted to post and let you know that I really feel for you and admire you. I look at my foot, and think, it’s still there, and there was a good chance on a Tuesday a few weeks ago that I could have lost it, and I’m so sorry that you did, why you and not me? These rare diseases, you think they should happen to someone else, and it’s impossible to know why it happens to you, and why it turns out one way for one person and another way for another person. We are both lucky that we survived. Keep recovering, my prayers and my heart are with you and your family. From what I’ve read, you are a very strong person and I wish the best for you.

      Michelle

      • 8-26-2012

Michelle, I thank God for your recovery from the insidious strep infection. NF is something that deserves more attention. I think there’s a lot we can do to improve initial ER diagnostics and this is one of the many causes that we hope to have the opportunity to champion over the coming years.

    • 8-23-2012

Aimee is the gift that keeps on giving! I have followed her tragedy from the beginning. She is simply amazing and I get tears in my eyes just thinking about her. She is most definitely an inspiration to all of us! Her strength amazes me as I read her updates! Go Aimee! God bless you!

    • 8-26-2012

I just finished a book called “All We Know Of Heaven” By Jacquelyn Mitchard. Its about two best friends who gets into a car accident, one dies and the other is in a coma. When she wakes up, they find out that they made a mistake and the one who dies was the one in a coma. She reminds me a lot of Aimee, how she got back into life. Sorry if my explimation of the book isn’t good! God bless you Aimee! 🙂

    • 8-29-2012

How many crunches in seven minutes?!
I really need to get with Aimee for motivation bc if she can do it, then I can too!!!
      GO AIMEE!

Thank you Aimee for sharing your positive energy on Katie. The last 4 yrs have been such a struggle thru my divorce and to see you so smilie and happy and with such a light about you inspires me to do something with my own situation. Katie said you will do great things, I say you already have because you have touched lives with your attitude. God bless you and keep it up!

  4. 7-29-2012

Each day I view your site hoping to see an update on Aimee. Finally! While most of us think we have troubles, along comes an Aimee with inspiration that is beyond anything we could ever dream. She is a fighter and very fortunate to have such wonderful parents. Thank you for sharing Aimee’s life with us and I hope the van proves to be very useful! With all you have to do, please keep the blog going.

  5. 7-29-2012

Andy, thank you for continuing to share Aimee’s remarkable positive outlook and recovery! Aimee and your family are in my thoughts and I continue to follow and look forward to more updates. Sincerely, Kathy LeoGrande

I love her determination, her strength, her
stubborness and her will to succeed. She is
one in a million. I am so glad that she is fighting the
    fight and winning.
She is a true inspiration to us all. God Bless you
    Aimee! <3<3<3<3<3

  7. 7-29-2012

She is inspiring people every minute of the day…..I can’t imagine how proud you of her…we think of all of you often, but not in a sad, worried way anymore – but in a excited way to see what unfolds in her life….she will do great things!

  8. 7-29-2012

This is fantastic! Aimee’s got the must-have attitude. When they asked me what my physical therapy goals were, at the top of the list was “boxing with Stephanie”, my PT 🙂 She tortured me with bean bags and on the tilt-table. In our prayers.

  9. 7-29-2012

Continued prayers and love for your beautiful daughter and your family. Yes, you must let your daughter think for herself. I help care for my cousin who has Stage IV breast cancer, she is near the end. She doesn’t want to be babied, remember this for Aimee. They still have a brain and can think. While their bodies may be slow and broken, the mind is not.
    Love, peace, and prayers…

  10. 7-29-2012

Unbelievable story. Have been following it since the beginning. I think I was number 517 to join the FB page. What a blessing! She inspires me to keep trying with my challenge of Inclusion Body Myositis. Thank you Aimee, mom and dad, health care folks and of course God!

  11. 7-29-2012

Man is she tough chick! awesome.. the same goes for the family!!

  12. 7-29-2012

So inspired by reading updates….glad she is such an independent soul!!!
God Bless or should I say may God continue to bless your family and Aimee…. 🙂

Victory is promised to those who persevere.
“No, dear brothers, I am still not all I should be but I am bringing all my energies to bear on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God is calling us up to heaven because of what Christ Jesus did for us.” Philippians 3:13-14

  14. 7-29-2012

Your stories of Amy continue to astonish me. What an incredible young woman you have raised – I hope you and Amy’s mother are taking some credit for the woman she is today. Go Amy!!

    • 8-16-2012

I couldn’t agree with you more! An amazing girl, and a remarkable family.

  15. 7-29-2012

Thank you for taking the time out of your hectic day to update Aimee’s condition. God is indeed working in her life and in the lives of her “prayer Army” as she progresses. I see such courage, purpose, and vision emerging from such a traumatic experience. It does put into perspective the minor daily hindrances that we face. God Bless You All.

  16. 7-29-2012

Go for it Aimee! You and I must have had the same PT’s. You know what got me to buckle down and work harder? I saw a elderly man that had no legs. He was a double amputee. It made me feel so small. The thing that popped up in my mind was, “Walk a mile in my shoes.” You’ve got the strength of spirit. Never let it go!

  17. 7-29-2012

You go, Aimee! As an arm amputee, I can assure you that you have the right attitude . I won’t use the word handicapped or disabled either. I have seen many quad amps at the Amputee Coalition conferences who are VERY capable of taking care of themselves. Don’t stop fighting but never block your blessings either.

  18. 7-29-2012

you know if we had more people like aimee, this wworld would be a better place.
i look forward to see smiee walk across the stage to get her mmaster

  19. 7-29-2012

Thank you for sharing Aimee’s story with us. I read every post of this blog and pray over Aimee’s care and recovery. Your beautiful daughter is an inspiration to everyone that everything can be overcome with faith and strength and the two of you, as parents are the epitomy of parental strength and a true inspiration yourselves. Thank you again and God bless you all!

  20. 7-29-2012

I’m 64 yo, am a cancer survivor (so far…LOL), have degenerative disc disease and walk with a cane…it’s people like Amie that make ou realize that most of what one experiences in life are challenges, not problems…challenges only make you stronger…my challenges have been put before me by GOD for a purpose, and the reasons I know not, nor does it matter…I have the rest of my life to try and figure this out if I want to take the time…but with someone like Amie, one realizes that it’s much more important to look forward than at something ‘over your shoulder’…what is, is…what was, was…just concentrate on today, as it’s all we’re given to handle…not the past nor the future…

GOD BLESS YOU Amie…even to those who’ve never met you you’re an inspiration…

    John…

  21. 7-29-2012

I believe that Aimee was given a gift, not one that anyone of us would consider a “gift” given the dire circumstances and consequences that have befallen her, but nonetheless a gift and this gift will reverberate across the lives of so many who have followed your daughter’s story. You also have to consider this gift has been given to you as well, because you have given all of us a glimpse of what true faith and Grace means in the telling of her story. I believe it will be told many times over. Please keep up the blogs to let us know even the smallest improvements, because we can continue to be amazed and awed by God’s love and devotion to a remarkable young lady and a wonderful family. I see great things happening in the lives you are touching with the story of Aimee. God bless you all.

  22. 7-29-2012

Andy, We really look forward to your Aimee blog updates. You have an amazing ability to write with emotion and pick the right words to allow us to be part of Aimee’s unexpected journey. Her amazing recovery is an inspiration to all of us. It is beyond comprehension of what Aimee can be accomplished with determination. Reach out to the universe and the universe reaches back. Thank you

  23. 7-29-2012

Such an inspiration to hear Aimees story. I too have been through a simmular situation. My daughter was hit by a drunk driver and lost her right arm. It was painfull for me to see this but her with the befief that God has kept her here for a reason was enough for her. Since the accident she had to relearn to walk and use her left arm for everything. To make a long story short to this day I have to make my self not ask her if she needs help with what she is doing. She is very independent and has a vihecle that has everything in it to help her be safe while driving. I thank God and all the prayers we still geteven after almost 4 years. Good Luck Aimee , Iknow it can be done. Praying for you.

  24. 7-29-2012

Aimee shoot for the stars. You can do anything through God who strengthens you. No disability should limit a person who wants to achieve more. I myself have been through the pain of physical therapy. But I kept telli g myself no pain no gain! Work hard and you can be able to drive. Maybe not a Prius but a vehicle suitable for you. You inspire so many people! Keep your eyes on God an he will provide all your needs!

daily !!!!! Love all of you !!!

    Cynthia Thomas

  27. 7-29-2012

I wish you much much strength and sending you lots of positive energy.
I can tell your family comes from a special place spiritually. I hope that carries you
Thru your challenges and HUGE SUCCESSES!!! We are all cheering you on… And
your family! What a gift you all are to us. While we focus on a tough economy and
Ever changing weather, and complain about the simplicites in life, we see your challenges. Many others and folks like me just want to know… ” how can I REALLY HELP?”
Please let me know if I can. Hair is easy… You may need that or something else. Only you
know. My studio is private, and I am not about press and attention. I’m about helping because
I had my own road. It’s about THE GIVING! If I can make your day a little better, that would be just great! Whatever
that looks like. Even if it’s just this post, in it I wish you all the best and maybe in your action, there will be a reaction that will shift many… Or just one. You helped me! Thanks Aimee. I’m here if you or your family need anything.

  28. 7-29-2012

As my surgeon told me, you have a disability, but you are not disabled. It took a little while to wrap my around that, but it’s true! Prayers for you and yours.

Love and prayers to all of you.

  30. 7-29-2012

I am inspired by Aimee and her loving supportive family. Reading this makes me see my life differently and the way I will try to raise my children from here on out. Words and the choices we make have such power, today I chose to make them count. My blessings go out to you, Aimee.

  31. 7-29-2012

Hoping the Best for you Aimee…Get well soon and post your nice picture 😀

  32. 7-29-2012

I want to be like Aimee when I ” grow ” up! This young lady is such an inspiration for so many people! I knew she was a strong person, I just underestimated how strong! Love and Hugs!

  33. 7-29-2012

Two hundred crunches in 7 minutes?? Gee, we thought Aimee was in rehab, not training to enlist in Army Rangers or Marine Recon! 😉 Way to go Aimee!

    Prius V……… excellent choice!

In all seriousness, that young lady is something else. I regularly check in to see how she’s doing. The human spirit is a beautiful thing; Aimee is certainly proof of that. Judging how well she’s doing, I suspect she’ll be back out in a kayak paddling in no time at all. God Bless and Take Care!

    Frank

  34. 7-29-2012

You and your family are such an inspiration! It blesses ME to see how God is blessing YOU! I pray for you all daily. We wouldn’t choose some of the paths in life if we knew where they would take us, but we always end up where we are supposed to be. God knows…HE is in control and it will be okay.

Thank you for the update date!

    Dawn

  35. 7-29-2012

Aimee, You never cease to amaze me. My continued prayers for you to quickly qain total independence.

  36. 7-29-2012

She has the correct attitude for healing, she has a great support group, and is lucky for both. Train like your life depends on it, because it does. Train like you will always never have help, because it could be, when it matters most. Train like you will care for someone besides yourself, because it is likely you will do that too. You are a great example for others to follow, I am really happy you are going about your rehab so well. I know days of tears will still be present, but you work through those too, and when the time comes, you will help others through those times.

    Best Wishes,
    Jeff

Stay strong Aimee! Praying for you.

  45. 7-29-2012

Hey, Aimee….I haven’t checked you’re dad’s blog for a while….as you recover and get good at what you will be doing, he is becoming a better writer! Funny, which I love.

Well, Aimee, you continue to inspire me. My pain levels continue to grow, my pain receptors are full, and although I do plenty of natural approaches to pain control, neuropathic pain, as you probably know, is difficult to control. But as I wrote, you inspire me to push through the pain….

You are in my thoughts, my prayers and my heart. The way you face your challenges (and it’s okay to have a down moment or day) is something our political leaders should look at, to learn how to face this country’s problems. But let’s not go there.

Be well, be happy and MAN, all those crunches and push-ups. And Andy, crunchy cereal does count!!!

The most beautiful people I have known are those who have known defeat, suffering, known struggle, known loss and have found their way out of the depths. These people have an appreciation, sensitivity and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen. – Historian Ray Nichols

Pain is a great teacher, but most of us would rather learn some other way. We think that happiness comes from a perfect childhood and avoiding mistakes. We don’t like that patched up feeling that comes from each survival. We would like to be seamless, no patches, no scars. Cherish your hard-won depth and understanding. Some pain is required for the journey. The gifts you seek are often disguised as problems. Patches bring strength, whether on your knees or in our hearts.

  46. 7-29-2012

You and your family are showing the world what love is!! My sister, Toni, has CP and lives with us. She is my personal inspiration and we have prayed for you all and will continue.

My prayers will continue for you and one day you will be good as new just keep letting God work and when he is ready he will make you good as new again. keep the faith and remember God is in a working process in your life. your courage is helping so many people have hope again.

  48. 7-29-2012

I love reading all your blogs and I am so inspired by all of you. May the road this is taking you to be easy. May Aimee keep going in the great direction she is going in and may your family continue to be strong and have faith.

Thank you for opening our eyes to what is truly important, family and faith.

  49. 7-29-2012

Sorry, one more thing. Have you heard of neurofeedback? It’s not the same as biofeedback, but it re-wires the brain to battle things like PTS and pain like the kind you have…phantom. Check it out:

  50. 7-29-2012

Keep up the hard work Aimee…..it will pay off. The prize? ….your continued independence.

  51. 7-29-2012

Praying for Aimee and knowing she will do everything she desires!
As a quad amputee who fought valiantly to to regain my quality of life, I know Aimee will drive and get her independence!
I hope to meet her one day and share in her success. Keep pushing Aimee, you rock.
Her strength and perseverance are powerful reminders to the world that what matters most is how you react to adversity and challenges…go Aimee!

I have said all along that this strong young lady will graduate, be married and have children within five years of her terrible tragedy. She is made of the kind of stuff our forefathers were made of, and from which we all benefit. She is a survivor and a thriver!
God bless her and all of you.

  53. 7-29-2012

Aimee you are incredible!!!! Think you are helping so many who felt so ready to give up!!Thanks??

  54. 7-29-2012

Aimee reminds me of a young woman I heard about a few years ago. She was also beautiful, and had a cancer in her thigh that required amputation of the leg to save her life. Her doctor felt bad about “butchering” such a beautiful young lady and was apologizing to her when she interrupted him with, “Doctor, I feel like a millionaire who’s lost a thousand bucks.” Sounds like your girl has a great perspective on life.

  55. 7-29-2012

I didn’t make it to church today. But nothing could inspire me more than just reading Andy’s blog about what Aimee goes through everyday in PT. Aimee, you will be able to do whatever you want to in life. And, I truly believe you will walk down the aisle and get that diploma in December. Now excuse me, I need to get on the floor and do some crunches!!

  56. 7-29-2012

Wow, Aimee is a real-life Wonder Woman, truly amazing! I couldn’t do 200 crunches even when I was 19 and in the best shape of my life. I think she has already proven that she is in no way handicapped. What an example and inspiration for all of us, God bless you Aimee!

  57. 7-29-2012

Go !!! you can do it Aimee, love from Mexico City.

  58. 7-29-2012

God Bless all of you for your courage, strength and faith. Aimee, you are an inspiration and a living, breathing sign of God’s love. Thank you.

  59. 7-29-2012

So Thrilled to know of your continued forward progress!! Thank You So Much for letting us be a part of your family!!:). I send thoughts of positive energy and strength to Aimee every day- she is an inspiration to all of us!! And to her Wonderful Sister, How Lucky Aimee is to have Such a Great sister!!:) My sisters were Incredible in being there for me with my own experience with Sepsis in Jan and continue through the long road of recovery– Sending you Tons of SISTER POWER for you:):)

Way back in 1992 my Wife became a quad amputee by result of same “flesh-eating’ bacteria. Unfortunately the distruction was incredibly severe and se spent 8 mos in hospital and rehab before she could come back home. So with that background let me say we went through the same difficulties, tears, and lots of laughter throuout recovery. We took a shorty school bus, equipped it with custom lift and custom toilet (without hands & feet this was a godsend for day trips). She then started an amputee support group and we learned a lot and helped people a lot. Our chldren were 8 and 11 years old at the time and they would ride the back of the power chair and my wife made it fun for them and taught them about overcoming the obstacles one can face throughout life. The chair had two speeds (fast and slow) the setting for her was always on fast! We learned and lived the word handi-capable and took advantage of every assistive device we could get or manufacture. So with these words, I applaud Aimee and Thank God she has the youthful energy and outlook to perservere. I am available for any oral support I can offer. God Bless the Aimee Copeland Family !

  62. 7-29-2012

Sending love & healing prayers from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories of Canada! Been watching your story from Day 1. What once were feelings of angst for Aimee have now turned to proudness for doing so well! Thank you for the updates & keep fighting Aimee!

  63. 7-29-2012

Hi Amie, I got the samething you got, infected calf, I was in the hospital for 17 days. As I was leaving the hospital, you were going to the hospital, and I have been following you storie. I to hate seeing my therapist, they had no idea of the pain I was going through. Just sitting up would be so painfull I would black out. But with every day trying this I was eventually able to to sit up, and make it to the bathroom. Now I like my therapist!

  64. 7-29-2012

I like your spunk and attitude! I hear you loud and clear!!! Lol. Keep fighting. :0)

  65. 7-29-2012

Aimee is a true “soldier” and I am inspired with every word I read. When first reading her story, I wiped away tears. Now, I am all smiles. I admit, I felt sorry for her in the beginning but now, all I feel is admiration. I can only pray that if I were in a similar situation that I could be half as strong as Aimee. Many prayers from my family to yours..

  66. 7-29-2012

You go, Girl!!!!! I am cheering from afar!!!!

  67. 7-29-2012

Amazing Surf Adventures are wishing you the best in your recovery and rehabilitation. We know how difficult this process can be and we love soldiers and civilians reaching to re-invent their dreams…

  68. 7-29-2012

Just wanted to say to you keep being you. The physical you may have changed but that has not changed who you are. I know how hard it is from my own limb loss. You have everything you need to win this battle and any thing else that comes along in life. You will overcome, you are already awesome only way you have to go is up. KEEP FIGHTING!!!! Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t. You will amaze your self at what you can do. MUCH LOVE AND PRAYERS!!!!! John

  69. 7-29-2012

Thank You for showing me that we can even when I think I can’t. God Bless.

  70. 7-29-2012

She continues to be an inspiration!Much love from Ohio!

  71. 7-29-2012

You are so loved…Can’t wait to read your updates…

  72. 7-29-2012

Aimee…you are truly an Angel on Earth! Thank you for reminding us how fragile, how precious and how full life “CAN” be!!!

  73. 7-29-2012

Aimee’s journey constantly reminds me that an attitude of gratitude is what gets me through anything life throws at me. My bumps in the road seem petty compared to what she has endured. I am reminded that God is good all the time!!

  74. 7-29-2012

Aimee is certainly an incredible young woman (an understatement), as is reflected by her role models (parents) and tremendous family support. God bless your family, you are on my frequent prayer list. Thanks for the inspirational story and keeping us posted, I hope it is therapeutic for you all.

  75. 7-29-2012

I am 41 year old mother of three, I have fibromyalgia, narcolepsy, and a few other things. Aimee you do inspire more than you know. It has been a hard road for me, I was always a very active kid. Then in March when I lost my mom that about did me in. Then I found your story, which I had a niece have the same thing several years ago, in her breast. She was only the third in the world to have gotten it there. She lost and suffered a lot but nothing like you have. It is very rare to see someone with your spirit, and it is wonderful to see. Thank you so much and I am so blessed to have found you my dear. Keep pushing and keep pushing me.

  76. 7-29-2012

I have followed your journey ever since your accident. I’m so very inspired by your courage, your spirit , and the love of your family. It has changed the way I look at my life. It would be an honor to meet you some day. Keep that fire burning. There is no way to know how many lives you’ve changed, just being you. God bless you and your family always.

  77. 7-29-2012

Amy is such an amazing young woman. I myself am a physical therapist, and stories like Amy’s make me so proud to be doing what I’m doing. I hope Amy continues to make progress in rehab daily. I wish you and your family well and I thank you for your candid and inspiring posts.

  79. 7-29-2012

Best wishes Aimee and family from Montreal, Canada! Aimee your name has been on many prayer group listings and people are still praying for your continued courage and healing. Your determination to be independent and succeed reminds me of Nick’s story. You are and will be an inspiration to many who HAVE their arms and legs..myself included! God bless you and your support system especially your family.

Andy, thank you for your updates on Aimee’s success. She is in my thoughts and prayers. Your story is a testament to your faith and inspires many. If ever you write a book of this journey of faith, hope and courage I would surely love to buy one. Your story is one of a loving “family” and enduring strength. Thank you, Aimee and family. God Bless you every minute.

  81. 7-29-2012

You keep up that hard work Aimee..truly a inspiration..I’m sure there are some bad days that sneak in…you keep fighting to get your life back…God Bless.

  82. 7-29-2012

Andy, I thank God for your gift of writing. It takes us right there with you. We smile with you, are in awe with you, and I do want to start doing those 200 crunches in seven minutes every day. Well, work up to doing that. She just inspires me so much. I think about Amiee daily. Thanks for the update. Aimee, you amaze me, and your attitude in this trial will end in you lacking nothing. James 1 tells about that. Can’t recall the verses right now, but it for sure is in James 1. Lacking nothing!!!!!!

  83. 7-29-2012

Keep on keeping on Amiee. Any many thanks for the updates, Andy. God Bless!

  84. 7-29-2012

Great going Aimee..keep it up. Prayers always coming your way.

  85. 7-29-2012

My husband’s niece also battled Necrotizing fasciitis. She was just placed in rehab a couple weeks ago but the other day had to return to the hospital due to blood clots and high blood pressure. Once they settle her high blood pressure, they will begin to close up her open wounds from the numerous surgeries to remove the bacteria. No one knows how Anna got necrotizing fasciitis, its still a mystery.

Its a slow process just like Aimee’s to recover from this horrible bacteria.

Anna has heard of Aimee’s story and her courage from Anna’s sister that told her about it. I believe that Anna has been inspired by Aimee and also has more courage now than she did before.

    God bless you all

  86. 7-29-2012

Sometimes it seems like punishment. It is to get you better. I also hated my therapist but it was my own good.

  87. 7-29-2012

I haven’t left a comment in a while because so many other people had written. I am so glad that you continue to heal and persevere through this challenge. I know God has a great plan for you! I will continue to pray for you and look forward to seeing all that you are going to accomplish!

  88. 7-29-2012

    Hi Aimee,

You are such an inspiration to ‘All” who are following your recovery. Because of my profession, i have always been interested in resilient children and adults. I know that you are working on a degree in psychology and I don’t know your plans but if you end up going into private practice or motivational work you will be an incredible role model.
    We are rooting for you!

    Sincerely,
    Susan Hendley

  89. 7-29-2012

  91. 7-29-2012

Aimee…You possess more wisdom and maturity than I almost 30 years older…my challenge are Mental…I am Bi-Polar among others and for at least 1/3 of every year I am gripped with a sadness I can’t fathom will ever end…but it does…but in those moments this year…I am reminded to look at my hands and feet and remember that I WILL BE WHOLE AGAIN VERY SOON…and it has gotten me through many dark days and nights…my prayers are with you…

  92. 7-29-2012

    Thank you!

Thank you,for sharing your daughter and family with us! Your updates make me laugh and cry but mostly cheer for your remarkable family!

Best wishes from beautiful Washington State!

  93. 7-29-2012

Great attitude, Aimee! I am inspired by your attitude and determination. You, and your attitude, are truly an inspiration to everyone. I thank you, and all of your family for sharing your inspiration with those of us who have yet to have the pleasure of meeting you in person. Thank you!

  94. 7-29-2012

As one who is mildly disabled Aimee is such a wonderful inspiration. I am certain God helped Aimee through this so that she might bring a message to the world of hope, perseverance, and strength, not only to the disabled but, to all who she encounters. She is a blessing and I thank you (her parents)for raising such an amazing human being, and God for delivering her through this tremendous challenge. May the great spirit continue to bless her and us with the fortitude to overcome the challenges we all face. xoxox Aimee I love you!

  95. 7-29-2012

Girl lost some flesh & bone, not her cool. Rock on!

    • 7-29-2012

Well said Armen, well said. I hope in the future she becomes a spokes person for people who have dealt with this flesh eating disease. I would love to see her out front with that attitude of hers, helping people, making tons of dough doing it, and enjoying her life. If I was someone making the next generation prosthesis’s I would want her to be the person modeling them, wearing them to show other people what life can be like, you don’t have to be bedridden or stuck in a wheelchair. This girl would rather crawl then have someone carry her. She is simply amazing.

  96. 7-29-2012

I continue to be amazed … at the awesome grace of God, at Aimee’s determination and strength, at the support of family, friends and strangers. Aimee, you will never (know this side of heaven) how many prayers have gone up on your behalf, how many people you have inspired and blessed, and how many opportunities you still have to share your faith with an audience that reaches farther than you could ever imagine. Continuing to pray for you and your family … thank you for sharing this journey with us.

    • 7-29-2012

Sorry for the misplaced parentheses, should be …you will never know (this side of heaven) …

  97. 7-29-2012

To quote As Good As it Gets – You make me want to be a better person. Aimee you are amazing have your family is amazing. Your strength in God is amazing. Every time I read your fathers blog I am in tears because it is so inspiring. I have two sons who are US Marines and I pray nothing happens to them but if it should I your story to assist them if something should. God Bless you and thank you. BTW = PT – they are sadists – but in a good way – they are like Drill Sgts – they are doing what they need to do to save your life. SEMPER FI

  98. 7-29-2012

Dearest Amy, your are in my thoughts and prayers…I cannot imagine how hard it is to go through what you have in such a short amount of time… and with such pain. But to be so positive and so strong.. God definately has a purpose for you! If you can get through this then maybe those who think they can’t do something will try.. just because you did. You are a true inspiration and a miracle. You have beaten the odds… now I am sure you will use your journey to inspire and teach other’s.. never give up. Stay strong and trust in God. Make the very most out of every day.. each day is a gift. And be thankful that your heart and soul remain untouched! You are a beautiful girl!!!!! I am so touched by your family and your love for eachother.. stay strong and I will continue to pray that you will accomplish everything you need to become independent and free… and to live a wonderful life that you so deserve! =)

  99. 7-29-2012

  102. 7-29-2012

    Simply amazing.

  103. 7-29-2012

Aimee, I grew up without a father in my life and after reading all the things your father says about you makes me wonder if my lack of the paternal guidance has been the cause of my lack of faith, ambition and devotion to others. I am sure that was the problem. Now I admire you and I feel that your father is the type of man I wish I had in my life. God love you and your family. Your faith and love for each other inspires me every day. My love to you all.

  104. 7-29-2012

Aimee, you challange us all to reach higher & higher because when the strength of the human spirit is tested to it’s upmost, it finds there is no ceiling, no limit to what we can do, because “we can do anything in Christ which strengthens us”. Carry on, child of the Lord–He is holding you in His hand.

  105. 7-29-2012

God Bless You All!!! You are ALL an inspiration to all of us. God has given you a strength that only He can give. We continue to pray for Aimee..

  106. 7-29-2012

Aimee is such an inspiration..thanks for sharing her story with us!

  107. 7-29-2012

Cool Aimee. You are an inspiration. I too am recovering and PT really hurts, but not as difficult as you. Now, the emotional pain is much worse, but there are PT exericizes to do for that, and when my spirit hurts and no longer feels like its there, there are some excersizes for that too…hehe. Take care.

  108. 7-29-2012

still as a distant cousin, you have made many changes in peoples lives. continue your road to recovery. travel it with GREAT PRIDE, knowing you are a new leader in many lives that follow you. AIMEE, for you an your dad, i feel a book to follow from each of you. a BEST SALER. in a time when more people will learn to know you both better from your heart filled experiences from this that has changed your lives so very much. best of lucky with endless prayers

  109. 7-29-2012

I am glad to read today’s update, when you didn’t update for a while I was certain things were going poorly. I am glad she is so fierce in her thought process. She is 100x the human being that I am. I am whole but feel empty and broken. She has suffered terrible loss and is going to fight and overcome anything thrown at her. She is amazing, I wish I had it in me to have her attitude, maybe I would if put in her position but I fear I would wither away and want to die. Can’t understand how she is able to see past what she lost, she had so much going for her, and some fluke bacteria took it from her yet she continues on like she just has a bad sunburn or something like that. Amazing..well beyond my capabilities.

  110. 7-29-2012

Great to hear of your progress and perseverance. You will have new dreams, different dreams perhaps, and your spirit will teach us all. Thank you for showing me what courage really is. You are an amazing spirit!

Keeping you and your family in my prayers.

  111. 7-29-2012

Kickin’ ass and takin’ names!!! GO AIMEE!!!! (and I can barely to 40 crunches and/ OR leg lifts…not both…so I am ever humbled)
Love from Delaware (it’s the little state on the East coast…we have beaches!!!)

  112. 7-29-2012

I think Aimee is the latest Superhero story. Good going Aimee. 8)

  113. 7-29-2012

Thank you so much for the update on Aimee….Though we don’t know her personally, our hearts and prayers are with her daily. She is an AMAZING young woman and I,like so many others ,would love to meet her in person one day to tell her so.She inspires all of us! What an AMAZING family you all are! I am continually humbled ,reading your story………”Amazing Aimee”………….!

  114. 7-30-2012

My birthday was a few days ago and if I’d had a cake with candles to be blown and and a wish to be made, that wish would’ve gone to you, Aimee. For continued perseverance, for continued determination, for continued grace, continued healing and continued love and enthusiasm for life. You are simply amazing, and I am astonished at your courage and positive attitude. You have an amazing family that few are blessed with. Cherish them always (even if they mistakenly think a van is cool LOL). Please thank for Dad for sharing your story and tell him he’s a wonderful writer! Take good care beautiful girl… TEAM AIMEE !! xoxo 🙂

  115. 7-30-2012

Y’all are a wonderful family and a great inspiration for us all.
Obviously Aimee had great examples to follow.

  116. 7-30-2012

    much love

  117. 7-30-2012

200 crunches?! 400 leg lifts!? Aimee you amaze and inspire! We love you all and are so thankful for all the Lord is showing in and through you.

  118. 7-30-2012

Minnsota sends love to Aimee! ‘Atta Girl!

  119. 7-30-2012

I think of Aimee daily. It sounded that from the start Aimee had brought a determined attitude into physical therapy. I believed that Aimee was making progress in her independence (brushing her teeth and eating); I was excited for her! I believe that Aimee is going to be independent adult; I believe in her totally. Hug her for me, please! Still, a thought enters my head and I hope to say it well; we all have a preconception about disability or as Aimee put it, being “handicapped.” My thought is that Aimee may be challenged to rethink what being disabled means; I believe totally that Aimee will live with her disability with total dignity and independence. She wants her life back and she will get it! I have a disability; there are times when I am so capable I don’t believe it’s there anylonger and then I notice it bigtime and I have to be patient and no that both exist in me: ability and disability and I have learned the skills to live independently when that disability is the more prominent feature. And I love myself for this unique experience that is mine in life and it no longer puzzles me, scares me, or leaves me lonely. Love from me. I know what planks are: you are working hard!

    • 7-30-2012

Very true. Our life is only a reflection of the spirit with which we attack it, and attack it we must. The difference between truly living and merely existing is all in our attitude. I believe that life should be lived on the offensive, we need to be actively engaged in every facet; we need to make things happen instead of playing defense and waiting for something to happen. Even when something does “happen”, you have to take immediate initiative to immediately change your posture from defensive to offensive. I believe this is a big reason for why Aimee continues to progress at such a rapid pace. As a family we have emphasized focusing on the positive and discarding the negatives. This attitude has clearly taken root in Aimee’s fighting spirit. I must add that the power of prayer has helped us to maintain focus on what is truly important. Without that, I believe we would be navigating without a compass.

      Andy

  120. 7-30-2012

Once again – Aimee is truly remarkable !!! Let’s ALL pray good things for one another.

  121. 7-30-2012

Aimee inspires us everyday. Our event at Five Forks Antique Mall Saturday was a huge success! Our customers and dealers turned out in force to support Aimee, she is a blessing that God has sent to us all, we pray every day for Aimee. We Love You! Jim and Pat

    • 7-30-2012

Thanks Pat. I apologize for not putting your name in the blog as a co-owner. That oversight has been corrected. 🙂 Thank you guys so much for your love and concern. I can’t wait to bring Aimee by there to meet you all.

  122. 7-30-2012

Aimee, you are truly a inspiration and a blessing. I am inspired by your determination and positive outlook. Phillipians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me”. Aimee I believe you will. I have told my wife, the youth I teach at church and several others, that you are my hero! You are an amazing young lady and I believe with your determination and faith in Christ, you will, with out a doubt, reach your goals. Hang in there Amiee, God has a plan for you! May He continue to work in you what that plan is.

    Steve

  123. 7-30-2012

A little blue eyed boy in Tennessee still prays for you every night…

  124. 7-30-2012

Thank you for continuing to update a bunch of strangers (although I’m sure many family and friends are reading as well) on Aimee’s improvements. I check back often to see how she is doing. I heard mention of the “girl from Georgia with flesh eating bacteria” several, several times before I actaully came across an article about it myself. And through that article I found your blog and have read every post. I love your sweet family, your faith in God and the bond that you all share. I know that God has great things in store for all of you. God continue to bless you all, especially Aimee, as she makes strides toward complete independence. I know she can do it! Phil 4:13.

  125. 7-30-2012

    Aimee,

You are thought of and prayed for often. You are touching so many people’s lives, and are such a great inspiration. I’m sure there are times that are difficult, but continue fighting through them. With the Olympics going on right now, I’m reminded of your desire to keep pushing through. Those athletes have worked their tails off to be where they are, and you have, too. “Hold fast,” girl! Keep your hand on the plow!!

And Andy, your writing is phenomenal… Please keep it up.

  126. 7-30-2012

Aimee is such an inspiring person as is her family, especially her dad. My prayers are with you all and
I am confident that you have that perfect combination of inner strength and wisdom to thrive in this or any situation. God bless you all.

  127. 7-30-2012

Thank you for keeping us updated on Amiee’s progress. What an amazing young lady she , I check every few days and was afraid now that she is in rehab that you might not continue your post . I am inspired by Aimee and your family more than i can tell you. Praying for Aimee and her continue success!!

  128. 7-30-2012

Aimee, you go, girl. You know that you have to be as independent as you can be. And I’ll bet your parents will be surprised as to how independent that is. I’m sure your therapists and case workers will tell you all of this, but you don’t have to live at home forever (and I’m sure that’s very tempting, considering what a wonderful family you have) and there are PCAs who can help you with ADL.

    Keep crunching!

  129. 7-30-2012

Awesome work! But I’m not surprised either, because you’re a fighter and a winner. I also understand you completely as I think the same way. Fourteen years ago I had a major reconstructive surgery to correct a congenital defect of my rib cage that was impacting my lungs, heart, etc. Anyway, eleven days after surgery, (in retrospect it might not have been the smartest thing to do), with my torso wrapped up in a body brace and wires holding bones in place…. I climbed the highest peak east of the Rocky Mountains….alone. Yes, I got a few “funny looks” out on the trail, but I was having a blast. So, what else can I say, I know exactly where you’re coming from and I so totally understand the reaction to “the van”.

  130. 7-30-2012

    BENDICIONES AIMEE DE COSTA RICA

  131. 7-30-2012

I just want to tell Aimee, the crunch monster, that my new goal is to crunch away this mild “gut” of mine. Thanks for the inspiration sister! Keep on truckin’!

    Praise YHWH!

  132. 7-30-2012

Andy, Donna, and Aimee…I’m a recent member of Morningside Baptist in Spartanburg. I see Sam and Pam there frequently. You all are lifted in prayer each Wednesday night. That’s the prayer service. Prayers are certainly not limited to that time. They are continuous from those of us who have been so inspired by Aimee’s courage and determination. We send our love and hopes and prayers to you. Our faith is strong, just as is Aimee.

Thank you so much for teaching this 63 year young ( 🙂 ), a thing or two, You go girl,
God Bless you Aimee, Shirley Hinton

  134. 7-31-2012

    Thank you for the update.
I “check in” most mornings to see how she is doing.
I continue to be amazed and inspired by her ongoing demonstration of courage. She is a remarkable young woman.
The lesson she taught me today is that we are the creators of our own limitations, that nothing is impossible under God.
Prayers for her and your family.

  135. 7-31-2012

I first applaud your daughter for her courage and her faith in dealing with this incredible challenge thrust upon her. But I also hope that with all of this inspiration and attention, she is being given the personal space to grieve the devastating loss of the life and the physical body she knew. Being a hero sometimes takes away the permission to be human and simply grieve.

Denial is one of the early steps in the grieving process and it can mask itself as recovery. You have all of my best wishes and prayers for her health and happiness. But also my caution that this is a lifelong marathon – not an inspirational sprint.

    • 8-1-2012

Aimee has indeed been given a wide berth over the past couple of weeks. When she withdrew from the narcotics, she dealt with her loss head-on. It was a very difficult period for her as she made the necessary psychological adjustments to her situation. The grieving process is very complex and it may take a while until that part is well behind Aimee. In the meantime she plows ahead with a focus to the here and now and she is making every effort to make significant gains on a daily basis.

It is my hope and prayer that Aimee will come to terms with her situation by using her energy to help others who are in a similar plight. The story of Hanna Rhinehart comes to mind. I have spoken to Hanna’s husband and Mark is a solid stand-up guy. I see our lives extraordinarily linked and I look forward to sharing a meaningful ministry with them and many others who have similar needs. Alone we die in anonymity; together we stand for an eternity.

i’m sitting here in tears! God bless u Aimee, Andy, and Donna! and Bless the girl at the store as well. U guys are truly an inspiration to sooo many people. Would love to meet you one day! GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  137. 7-31-2012

Andy, thanks for keeping us updated on the blog. I’m with Today in PT magazine, and I’d love to interview you or Aimee for a story. I’d like to talk to you about what the physical therapists are doing in rehab, the challenges and how it is helping Aimee. If you are available sometime this week or early next week for a phone interview, please e-mail me or call at 408-376-3885 (California number). Thanks!

Aimee is a modern-day Anne Frank. Each of these young women
faced adversity with courage and the will to survive. Wonderful fathers share(d) the stories of their inspirational daughters. Both families have and are still inspiring the world. Wow! God bless you all.
Lisa S., Andy’s friend from high school

    • 8-1-2012

Hey Lisa, thanks for your kind words. I truly appreciate your loving spirit. I look forward to seeing you the next time I head back to good old Sparkle City.

  139. 7-31-2012

    Aimee’s Dad,

As I read your blog, it becomes so clear that you have a wonderful, amazing, beautiful daughter. I have no doubt in my mind that she will do the impossible.. she is such an inspiration.

But, what is also so clear through your blog, is what an amazing father you are, you bring so much inspiration to the story as well. I am 27 years old and am still very much a daddy’s girl at heart. Everytime I read your posts, it just makes me want to give my dad a big hug around the neck!

I was most inspired by the “Night and Day” post where you detailed Aimee saying that she viewed her challenge as a blessing and you pondered if maybe this was preordained. This particularly struck me because I do believe that God has a plan for each of us… and just as we are seeing through Aimee’s wisdom and inspiration that God has an amazing plan for Aimee’s life, I think God also knew exactly what he was doing when he picked you to be Aimee’s father. She is so lucky to have you and I know Aimee is proud and thankful for you beyond words.

    Praying for your family, always.

    • 8-1-2012

Thank you Kate, I appreciate your kind and loving words. I am glad that you grew up with a good father and that is quite apparent in the tone of your words. Your prayers mean more to us than you will ever know. God bless you!

  140. 8-1-2012

Way to go Aimee. I grew up with a father who only had one arm and used a hook. My father could do more with that one hook than most people could do with both of their hands. From breaking horses to rebuilding a motor in a truck.

    • 8-1-2012

I am significantly inspired by people who have learned to cope with and overcome disabilities. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a disabled person, but there are people with disabilities. Those who overcome disabilities are the most awesome people on the planet. I cannot tell you how blessed we are to have a daughter who has taken the bull by the horns and wrestled it until it screamed “UNCLE”!

  141. 8-1-2012

Aimee is an inspiration, especially the 200 crunches ;). I am sure that Aimee has the best medical and technology advisors, but thought I would send this link to the incredible tech that is out there and being worked on by brilliant people. http://www.tvkim.com/watch/2183/kims-picks-gesture-controls-for-devices?utm_medium=nl&utm_source=notd&utm_content=2012-08-01-article&utm_campaign=end-j I hope that some of the incredible mind – body control research will become reality to make Aimee’s life simpler. Best, best wishes.

  142. 8-1-2012

Believe, you are an inspiration to all of us Aimee.

Today I had the wonderful opportunity to come help out at the Copeland residence as part of a Team Depot project with Home Depot and needless to say I would do it again in a hearbeat if given the opportunity. We painted the ceilings of the kitchen and other rooms on the 1st floor and it was truly an amazing experience to give back like that. Thanks to the people from the Snellville Home Depot(I’m from Monroe) and there is no doubt the Copelands are very blessed. I only saw a little bit of the new addition but I have a feeling it is going to turn out fantastic.

    God Bless

    Sean

    • 8-1-2012

Sean, thanks for coming over and helping out. Team Home Depot is an incredible organization with a huge heart. The effort and energy that you brought to our residence was nothing short of extraordinary. I love y’all with all my heart!

      • 8-1-2012

Thank you Mr.Copeland for allowing Home Depot to participate in helping you guys out. I only wish there was more I could do.

  144. 8-1-2012

Aimee, you are a terriffic inspiration and role model for hope, joy, vision, and perseverance to the entire world. You are encouraging countless others to carry on their own lives, all far better people for reading about your progress through Andy’s informative blog. God bless you and your dear family!

Hi, My name is Michael Graziano. I’m partner in a film company called Uji Films based in Nashville, TN. For the last year we’ve been working on a documentary called RESISTANCE about the growing pandemic of antibiotic resistant bacterial infections. We’ve interviewed some of the world’s leading infectious disease experts from the CDC, WHO, the FDA, Astra Zeneca, and elsewhere. We’ve also talked with microbiologists, politicians, economists, and journalists from around the country. We’ve been following Aimee’s story closely and are so thrilled and relieved that she pulled through. As evidenced by the comments on your blog she is an inspiration to many people. We’d very much like to talk with someone about possibly including Aimee and her story in the film. You can reach me any time at resistance[at]ujifilms[dot]com. You can check out more about RESISTANCE at facebook.com/resistancethefilm THanks and hope to hear from you soon.

  146. 8-2-2012

Dear Aimee, you don’t cease to amaze me!!! Of course you’re doing great in rehab – you’re not a quitter. You live life!! I hope that someday you will see what a terrific motivator you are. I continue to hold you and your entire family in prayer.

  147. 8-2-2012

So does Aimee have a soundtrack to do her physical therapy to? I could easily picture her jamming out to “Eye of the Tiger” while doing Rocky style workouts.

    • 8-2-2012

Aimee would prefer working out to G. Love and Special Sauce, Slightly Stoopid, Leftover Salmon or The Grateful Dead.

  148. 8-2-2012

I’ve just discovered your blog and feel so blessed to “know” your family by way of your postings. Aimee sounds delightful, and I believe the Lord has and will use her in a powerful way. God bless you all as you continue to bless others.

Thinking of Aimee while watching Oscar Pistorius, and hoping great things for her, too.

  154. 8-4-2012

Inspiring is an understatement. She is even more than that.

  155. 8-4-2012

    Aimee,

I made my first post on your Dad’s first blog in April. I have since followed each new post to keep abreast of your improvements in health and spirit. In my original post I explained how the Holy Spirit had led me to pray for you day and night. I’m still sending those prayers heavenward knowing that God is listening and He is working in your life to help you recover and move forward to fulfill your destiny.
From this last blog it is evident that prayer has helped you with your courage, determination and will to master any challenge before you and to be forward thinking about your future. You are an inspiration and a blessing. God bless you Aimee. Prayers go up again tonight.

    Michael

I have to admit (shamefully so) that for a short moment I thought “Who is paying for all this?” Sure, they are raising money and all, but it’s got to be millions of dollars (and the wing was donated too, I understand). Part of me thought, pretty white girl gets all this attention while in the meantime, I’ve read very short pieces about people, mostly men, who contracted the same illness….several in the mast few months.

But then I look at all you have done for yourself. I think faith, prayer and the support of your family has been incredible, but you, Aimee are in the end, the one responsible. And you’ve done a heck of a job!

  159. 8-9-2012

Hi Andy, Aimee, everybody. Aimee, you are so strong and athletic! I’ve never been athletic, but luckily my family and my dogs have kept me moving and I’m kind of fit even at 67. BUT!! Because of you, Aimee, I have started actually working out, trying to not lose strength as I age. Wow, I can’t even believe it, but I am actually working out for the first time in my life! So thank you! I googled and found Kimberly Fleming, a young, very sincere, calmly motivating girl in Atlanta, a great trainer with a lot of really excellent videos online on YouTube as well as on her own website. I don’t know her, and I’m not promoting her, except to say that her videos and her style and attitude are really helping me. I thought you might want to know about her website, keepitmovingfitness.com. Fun to look around in there!! Aimee, keep up the good work, and Andy, thanks so much for sharing Aimee’s progress.

  160. 8-10-2012

Perhaps you could gently press your hands upon Aimee’s forehead and say that she is now “Andy-tapped”, which not only sounds like “handicapped” but also would be much like from what is described from the Bible, when one would ask for the father’s blessing.
And I ask for our heavenly Father’s blessing upon you all!

  161. 8-10-2012

One word discribes you Aimee. Wow.
    Xoxoxoxo

  162. 8-11-2012

    Hello Andy,

I’m a pilot on deployment to Afghanistan right now. Back home, I’m working on my graduate degree in occupational therapy. I am floored Aimee’s meteoric recovery, and your vivid accounts thereof.

I would be honored to fly a US flag over here on her behalf.

If that’s something you all would like, message me your mailing address so I can send it over.

Thoughts and prayers going your way. – Niko

  163. 8-11-2012

Every time I read an update on Aimee, I am blown away by her strength and courage. I watched Soul Surfer again tonight, and I have often thought of Bethany Hamilton when reading updates from you via Debra or this site. Prayers continue to go up for Aimee every day!

“I wouldn’t change what happened to me because then I wouldn’t have this chance, in front of all of you, this chance to embrace more people than I ever could have with two arms.” -Bethany Hamilton, Soul Surfer

  164. 8-12-2012

As of Day One of her accident, I continue in prayer for Aimee, and stand in AWE as to Aimee’s recovery, and her total focus and commitment on the project at hand. She will be able to drive herself one day; she will not be denied her independence, and she deserves it! Think of yourselves at age 24: your mindsets at that time, and the independence you demanded!

I am a licensed general contractor for over 30 years and, further, certified in 10 specific trades; and I feel so helpless in “Aimee,s Wing”. These certifications in Ohio are among the most stringent in the country, and I regret I could not participate. I am sure Pulte Homes would not have objected to my contribution. I have worked with many handicapped customers; one being a 71 year young widower who had both legs amputated mid-thigh, and lived in a 100-year-old 2-story house. He knew about the amputation 3 months beforehand, from a blood and artery disorder he had been fighting for almost 2 years. We put an outside lift from the drive to the porch 4′ high and a small elevator inside to the second floor; first-floor bath w/wheelchair access to shower; wheel-chair-friendly kitchen. He was driving himself 10 weeks after the double amputation! And there was 6″ of snow and 20 degrees! Howard’s biggest challenge was getting the ice & snow off the car windows! Aimee will drive again!!

I wake up every morning and thank the Good Lord for my aches and pains and the fact that He has given me another day of life. God is still in control! What an awesome God we have! He has great plans for Aimee! He brought Aimee from the brink of death and put her in His appointed position to work miracles in many lives! God bless you all! Christ said,”These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”(John 16:33 KJV) Praise the Lord!!

God bless and strengthen you all: Amiee, Paige, Donna, and Andy! My ongoing prayers are with you all!

    Love in Christ,
    Curt

What an amazing amount of grace He has given to your dear Aimee! She is an inspiration and I’m so thankful for her sake that she has praying parents who doubtless raised her to be prepared for the circumstances that often come as they may. I believe that her life will continue to reach, motivate and inspire others through her fortitude and strong spirit.

  166. 8-13-2012

You are wrong, sir. She will never know the true inspiration she has been, not by half. She will never realize how many conversations she has entered, discussions she has unknowingly interrupted, or prayers she has starred in. Where I heard or spoke her name daily in the beginning, and only weekly or even bi-weekly now, she is still on our minds and in our hearts. Every couple years there is a hero story, a tragedy with a happy ending. Amy is our hero, and her story is our happy ending. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  167. 8-14-2012

May God bless you and your struggles. I sat and watched the Olympics and saw this amazing individual (Oscar)race with two prostectic limbs and saw what he accomplished. At the time I was thinking of all our service men and women, but you are an inspiration for all of them. You are truly a beautiful young lady and with all our prayers and God’s help and all your hard work you will overcome and one day do all the things you want to do. You are truly awesome.

  168. 8-14-2012

I have read Aimee’s story and am so inspired by her courage. I just happened to read an article that said Aimee is suffering possibly from some phantom pain in her hand, and it immediately reminded me of a book I just read titled “The Brain That Changes Itself” by Norman Doidge, M.D. There was a whole chapter in this book about phantom pain and how it can definitely be successfully treated. I have no clue at all if it can possibly help, but I felt compelled to write a message just in case it can help at all (I have never written on a board before!). I think the doctors that are the experts in this are Dr. McGeoch at the University of California, San Diego and V.S Ramachandran. I hope this can be useful if ever needed. Best of luck and best wishes during recovery.

  169. 8-14-2012

I remember the day you asked us to pray for the doctors said Aimee had little to no chance of living. For those of us that believe,
her recovery is another reminder that there is but one great physician. God bless your family and especially Aimee.

  170. 8-15-2012

I have not been able to keep up as we have been out o the country and just saw the latest entry . I don’t expect you to publish this response but I would like to comment on the latest entry. While I continue to admire Aimees amazing perseverence and your faith I am troubled by your perception of “handicapped.”. Aimee doesn’t want to be some handicapped person. I have a handicapped daughter. She does not have the luxury of doing 200 crunches let alone one. It is not because she is lazy, her muscles are atrophied or dead due to muscular dystrophy . She is handicapped- she will never drive her own car because her hands are too weak. She is handicapped : she will always depend on others for the smallest things. YET she is starting her junior year of college at the age of 17 years. She has published a book. Her faith in Christ surpasses most people I know . She is handicapped and dependent but doesnt the Bible talk about the last being first and the weak shaming the strong – God showing His glory through the weak and foolish? Just a thought.

    • 8-15-2012

It was not Aimee’s intent to denigrate your daughter in any way. I personally differ greatly with your point of view. I do not consider your daughter to be handicapped, I consider her a human being who suffers from a disability. The word “handicapped” is a noun, a label that names what a person is. When you say someone suffers from a disability, you are using an adjective that describes a condition. I see that as being a tremendous difference.

Aimee will not be labeled. I do not want her to believe that she is any different from any so-called “able-bodied” person. While your daughter may not have responsive musculature, she does have a responsive brain. Your daughter has accomplished much, more in fact than most 17 year-olds. Aimee has a better word to describe your daughter and this is a word that we should all agree on. Your daughter is best described as being “handi-abled”.

      God bless you.

      • 8-16-2012

Andy, what a great spokesman you are. I have read other media posts and am so glad to hear that Aimee will be soon be home living in her own wing. Please please please post pictures of her pretty face. I want to see her reaction to what she sees. Thank you so much for all of your wonderful words. I continue to hold you and your entire family in prayer.

        With love,
        Sally

      • 8-26-2012

Thank you Sally. You will soon be able to see Aimee and hear her express herself when she appears on Katie Couric’s new network (ABC) daytime talk show on September 10. Until then, I am respecting Aimee’s wishes to enjoy her privacy before what ultimately could become a media firestorm after 9/10. September is going to be a crazy month for the Copeland household.

  171. 8-15-2012

I have heard about your phantom pain. In my practice as a chiropractor, I have seen quite a few people with phantom pain and have actually helped and even stopped the pain through adjustments. It is a pretty simple explanation. Your body is wired much like an appliance, and sometimes the reflex circuits go hay wire. If the circuits can be reset through moving the bones of the spine that are effected, then your body will rid itself of the pain. if you need a good chiropractor in your area, I could find you one.

  172. 8-15-2012

I am not a religious person, and I do think that we should also thank the doctors and her family for Aimee’s survival. With that said I’ve never seen so much grace in a person before. After learning about what happened to Aimee and listening to her amazing dad speak about her strength and endurance, I’ve changed my whole outlook in life.

All of us could only hope we have so much grace as we move on through life as she does.

I am wishing you the best Aimee

love&hugs from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  173. 8-15-2012

I and thousands of other people across the world hope and believe that no news about Aimee is good news. Just a line or two would be enough to let us know how you are all coming along.
Love to you all from Anna in Denmark.

  174. 8-16-2012

Amie, I can imagine you being again a vibrant, pretty, blonde, very attractive typical American girl to me. Miki

  175. 8-17-2012

Aimee, if you don’t want to use a wheelchair adapted van, you dont have to. I understand not wanting to be dependent. I have a medical condition myself and at times I insist on doing things myself even when I can’t really do them…it’s painful. My condition compares in no way to yours, and the amazing fight you’ve put up, but I understand not wanting to look or feel ‘disabled.’ You know, there are versions of wheelchair accesible vans that YOU could drive YOURSELF. Not saying you ahve to use one, but getting to where you can drive an un-adapted vehicle will probably take time. How long I don’t know if anyone can say. An adapted vehicle will give you MORE independence and the ability to drive yourself until your physical abilities catch up with what YOU are determined to do. You already have the best resource you need…the determination and spirit to fight for whatever you desire! God has done amazing things for you, He will continue to help you, and we’re ALL praying for you! You go girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  176. 8-17-2012

Andy – I wanted to tell you that I saw Aimee today while dining at a restaurant with my son. I have followed her story via Internet, news and your blog since the beginning. I have so much respect and admiration for her. When I saw her today I was in awe. I wanted to talk to her….tell her just how amazing she is, but I didn’t want to interrupt her meal. She looked beautiful and seemed to really be enjoying herself. Seeing her out and about just made my day!!

    • 8-26-2012

Amy, thank you for respecting Aimee’s privacy. She has indeed been getting out into the public and she’s just living life as anyone would. I think you can expect to see her out more and more over the coming days, months and years. Aimee never was and never will be a homebody.

  177. 8-19-2012

Hi, I have been following Amy’s story from the beginning and just wanted to let you know that you, Andy, have inspired me to be a better parent. I know longer stress out about the small things that don’t really matter. Now I take the kid’s to the park after school and we sit on the grass and talk about school and ‘life’, instead of me screeching at them to ‘hurry up’ and do their chores. We now celebrate family more, with BBQ’s and picnics and catch up’s over coffee. You and Amy have changed so many lives and for that I and my family thank you. God Bless and keep you all safe.

    • 8-26-2012

Thanks Dana. I think it’s okay to stress over small things – in fact, I still do just that. If you are as expressive and spontaneous as I am, you will find that stressing over small things is very difficult to avoid. Such moments pass quickly and often leave one with a sense of shame. Shame is good, because we become stronger when we realize our weaknesses. As a parent, it is good to be humbled. I believe that the real danger of parenting is when we no longer experience shame and humility. I constantly pray for God to strengthen me and help me through my weaknesses. Oddly, He seems to best accomplish that task by placing more stress in my life. My stress muscle is getting pretty doggone strong.

As you know, Aimee’s illness was no small matter. I honestly believe that any parent would have reacted just as we did to this situation. We had plenty of time to pray over this matter and ask for God’s help. Our singular focus was Aimee’s well-being and all other issues were subordinated. What other choice did we have?

As for celebrating family, I am down with that! I love spending time with family and friends and that is the one thing that makes life so wonderful. I firmly believe that the love we share with each other comes from God and when we share that love, it is synonymous with hugging God. I loves me some God-hugs. 🙂

  178. 8-19-2012

Aimee, your words are a constant sticky note on my Mac as I deal with the effects of chronic pain. We have the blessing, indeed, of dealing with things others have not dealt with so we can help those no one else can help.

  179. 8-20-2012

The media attention for Aimee, via the renovations to her home especially, is more than most people could imagine in their wildest dreams, with or without a handicap. What happened in Amiee’s case to generate such a profound affluence of donated services and materials that hasn’t happened for other men and women in her exact same situation? Did her father, writer, blogger, site developer, single-handedly bring this kind of attention to her case that afforded such an out-pouring of blessings and recourses? I would like to help others to achieve the same kind of assistance that Aimee enjoys.

    • 8-26-2012

Kathryn, I often ask the same question: how did it come to this? The intense interest generated by Aimee’s story is a very complex situation and there’s a back story to it that would take chapters to reveal. I can only sum it up by saying that the power of prayer brought a level of divine intervention that defies the human imagination. Simply put, it’s a God-thing.

On the other hand, I have to add that not everyone is as fortunate and blessed as we are. Some families that we met in the ICU in Augusta have not had the same positive results that our family experienced. One young 24 year-old man, who had been in the JMS burn unit for nearly a year, recently succumbed to his injuries. Our hearts are heavy with news of this family’s loss and our prayers and thoughts go out to them.

I cannot explain the inexplicable. I can only venture down the path that God has prepared for our family. I accept His bidding without question and I will follow where He leads. I hope and trust that our walk will ultimately take us to a place where we can help others who have similar needs.

Finally, just to clarify: I am not a site developer. I have no idea how to develop an internet site. This site was graciously created and donated by one of Aimee’s friends, while another of her friends has donated his tireless energy into maintaining it at a very high level. All I do is post my thoughts. In fact, that is all I have done from the start.

        Hi Andy,
I have a pretty good idea why Aimee and your family have been the beneficiaries of such an outpouring of love. First of all, you’ve openly showed the strong bond of love within your family and your love of God. Though we live in a world where there is a lot bitterness and cynical viewpoints, there are still a lot of us out here who aren’t that way. You’ve reached out to share to others during the toughest days of Aimee’s ordeal and you’ve shared in a positive and loving way. Perhaps an appropriate descriptive term would be “approachable”. You’ve welcomed hundreds if not thousands of total strangers to share in this and to have the opportunity to share their love and kindness. No doubt the biggest factor is Aimee herself. I’m pretty sure my impression of her is spot on correct when I see her as a kind, compassionate, highly motivated young woman with a peaceful and loving spirit towards nature and humanity.

It’s really easy for me to explain why I’ve been so concerned and interested in her recovery. As I’ve mentioned before, but for the benefit of others reading this, only five weeks before Aimee’s accident I was literally hours from being in a situation that could have cost me my limbs or my life when what my doctor called a “superbug” infection was wreaking havoc in my arm. Fortunately I got the right help at the right time, but one slip and the outcome would have been far different.

So for me its like my life journey took me to the edge of a cliff and I was starting to slide over the edge (sort of like the rocks and stones were bouncing on the canyon floor below while me feet were slipping), then someone from above tossed a rope down, caught me and slowly started lifting me up. Then as I had barely reached the top, still not sure of my safety, I look to the side and I see someone else coming over the same cliff, but she falls much farther and hits the boulders and is hurt. I can’t just climb over the top of that cliff and leave, not knowing or caring what happened. But as I anxiously watch what has happened, I see someone who not only survives, but thrives and inspires. Ultimately I come away with a new focus and appreciation for life and a mission to help others.

I just want to say not only is Amiee amazing, but so is her dad! She is very lucky to have you! (I lost my father to a heart attack when I was eight years old)
Thank you for articulating her journey so well, so that others may be inspired. 🙂

Thank you for sharing Aimee’s story. I am so inspired with her strength and dedication. Her sheer will and determination is proof that ones life is what you make it. I will keep you all in my prayers.

Aimee is an inspiration. I’ve gone through devastating ovarian cancer diagnosis and I spent over two months in a hospital with other cancer patients going through chemo in-patient. I saw two kinds of people. Ones who felt like they’ve lost it all and others who felt they’ve gained so much through the ordeal. God told me just before my surgery to remove the cancerous tumors, you have a choice. I chose the latter. I really identify with Aimee. Yet, she is much stronger than me. I am so humbled by her faith.
Keep fighting. You can all things through Him who gives you strength.

    In Christ,

    Jennifer Sheldon

Aimee, we met at the airport outing and its clear you are an inspiration to everyone with whom you come in contact. We’re having a disability fair on October 10, 2012 and would like to invite you to speak to our group about what you’ve learned as you’ve become the face of disability for a large group of people. Please contact me if you are interested so we can discuss the details.

Thanks David, I will pass on your request to Aimee.

    Way to go Aimee!
I wonder if you have heard of the Chinese guy who can’t afford prosthetics, so he is making his own and is making some for others also out of metal, and they work. His name is Sun Jifa, another inspiration. Search his name, it was on the news recently.
I am on line a lot volunteering for a mental health forum. I know that each day we get 50-100 ‘I want to kill myself’ situations. I know the statistics of suicide each year.
I can not say just how much you are contributing to helping young people see the worthiness of life , even in dire or difficult situations. That speaks volumes, Aimee. Just what you are DOING.
Although I don’t believe bad things are blessings, I DO believe what we do with them is what makes the difference and the blessings to others.
You are a shero to many. Thanks. All the best to you.

God bless you. I pray for Aimee every day. I teach my nearly 5 year old son about Aimee. When he asks for details I explain that she lost her hands and feet but that she is driven by the amazing power of the Holy Spirit. I have experienced my own miracles this year, product of lots of prayers from many people. God blessed me so much and now I ask HIM daily, as part of my prayers, to please bless Aimee, wonderful do–it-all super-able Aimee…. God bless her and all who love her.

Amy, you are an inspiration to me. I can’t wait to read your doctorate thesis. I sure hope you make it public so everyone can read it.

  189. 9-6-2012

Aimee has truly Inspired us. My 6 yr old son lost his foot In a lawnmower accident In April an we have been following Aimees story.

  190. 9-6-2012

Aimee, hope you are okay, very hard, can say this is no easy. I learned that I still have part of a body and that is good enough. I have strong arms, but my spirit is whole. Hope you feel the same in your own way.

I just looked at the Katie Couric Show’s listing for Sept 11th. It reads, “Graduate student Aimee Copeland WALKS onto stage and tells of losing parts or all of her limbs to a rare, flesh eating bacteria.” Walks onto stage? What have we missed? I can’t wait to see the show.

  192. 9-10-2012

Saw the preview for Katie and I was amazed at how fit you looked in that pink tank. I need to follow your workout. I lost the left leg (hip disarticulation) from a rare tropical infection. I sought medical help but it was too late when they caught it.I hope to follow your lead. I have been quite isolated with this but can’t wait to see your strength. Thinking of you.

  193. 9-11-2012

I just saw Aimee on the Katie show and was so inspired by her attitude, spirit, etc. She is truly extraordinary…as a matter of fact, the Copeland family is extraordinary! In watching Aimee on TV, I felt no pity, but was truly inspired. I’m not one to wear my faith or spirituality on my sleeve, but surely Aimee has been chosen to do great things.

  194. 9-11-2012

My prayers were answered today when I saw Aimee on “Katie”‘s show. Those 45 minutes made my whole MONTH! Just seeing her and hearing you speak of her and all the Lord has done for her and your FAMILY was wonderful news.

I have written you before as I am also a survivor of necrrtizing faciotous from a tiny cut I had on my foot when I came in contact with a seaturtle during a weekend dive trip in Key West. It was recognized by my wife when I got out of the shower with a bright red line running down to my foot and called my doctor immediately. Hed got everything ready for me as my wife drove me to the hospital as my leg worsened. She was told I may not live but 2 days later they said I would loose my right leg from the hip down. The day after she was told It would only be from the knee down. then it was just my ankle and foot. The Lord, whom I love and serve, saved my entire led down to my toes. That was in 2005. In the last 15 months I’ve had 4 surgerys on the left knee with a serious infection and then a fall which tore thru my patellar tendon. Well, I’m still in a brace and praying fro Aimee because I still have what she does not have, and I’m a 65 year old guy who has lived thru wars and good times too. I love to travel and Seeing Aimees new Chevy van she will see sights still yet unseen by her.

Most of my travels these days are done on Google IMAGES. But I am in Tampa, Florida and there is still a lot here to see. I hope you all get to come on down! The Florida Keys are a different world!

    God bless you and yours!
    frank

    Dear Copeland Family,

I have followed you since I heard about your accident on the news. I have followed this same story with another young man named Blake Haxton, the son of some friends of ours at church. He developed this horrific desease after a rowing practice about 4 years ago. Thanks to the great doctors at The Ohio State University Medical Center and MOST OF ALL, the MIRACLE granted by GOD ALMIGHTY, Blake, who also lost his left leg and hip and all but 20% of his right leg, is now a senior at Ohio State and doing great! His life has become then greatest testimony of God there can be… I believe that Aimee’s life was saved for the same reason. Stay strong and I will continue to pray for her recovery!

    In Him,

    Gloria Carpenter

your positivity and happiness is so encouraging. I know it’s not uncommon for all of us to think our lives are “so hard” and we are all “so unlucky” blah blah. Sometimes when life gets tough, I find myself with such a sour attitude and it’s so incredibly unhealthy for me and not fair to the people around me. Your story is truly inspiring and it really makes me realize how lucky all of us as, no matter what cards we have been dealt in life. What’s more important is your positive attitude though all of this. I don’t know a single person who could maintain such a good attitude through such a life-changing event. Your family and friends are so lucky to know such an inspiring, happy girl who is lucky to be here every day. Thank you so much for all your strength and courage. I only hope I can be as strong as you one day. Take care and good luck young lady! You are an AMAZING woman!

  197. 9-11-2012

Aimee, I am so proud of you and how well you are handling everything that has happened to you. I live in Loganville, GA so I have kept up with your progress. In June my husband Tom went to the hospital in Snellville with numbness in his right leg they told him he had a pinched nerve in his back, we went back a few days later his foot was blue, turns out he had a blood clot in his abdomen that cut the circulation off in his right leg, they then had to life flight him to Emory University where they eventually had to amputate his right leg above the knee. You both have very positive attitudes about what has happened to you both and I find that to be a wonderful thing. I will continue to keep up to date on your progress and pray that you can accomplish all of your goals.
God Bless you Aimee and God Bless my husband Tom, may you both continue with your positive attitudes and complete success.

Pretty amazing family you have there.

You ALL are such an inspiration, and Aimee looks amazing! I hope life is getting back to normal for you all, and you all are getting some time to just sit back, spend some quality time together, and just breathe some relief after all this. I hope and pray for peace for you guys!

    (((hugs))) to you all.

What a thrill it was to see Aimee on the Katie Couric show. Praise God for her remarkable recovery. I remember when her chances of survival were described as “slim to none” and now she is the picture of health with so much purpose and drive. A MIRACLE. A gift from God for all of us but especially the many people who will benefit from her insights. Andy, you, Donna, and Paige are also a gift from God. The way you all handled yourselves and coped during this trial still inspires me. Genuine Christ followers who cling to Jesus through the ups and downs of life. God bless you all and congratulations Aimee, on your tremendous accomplishments. I can’t wait to see what is next.

As soon as I read about a fun experience that turned into a nightmare for you, I began to pray for your recovery. You are such an inspiration to people of all ages (I’m 58). I wondered how you are doing, and picked up a recent USA Today and saw an update on your many accomplishments as you continue to recover. By the grace of God, you are a SURVIVOR, and we, those you know and don’t know, are glad about what matters most, and that is you are alive. Thank you for reminding me that determination and discipline RULE over any obstacles a person may have. You are are awesomely mature young lady that we can all learn from when faced with adversity. God bless your continued progress.

  203. 10-16-2012

Aimee, You are an inspiration and I’m glad you have such a great support system.
I’m a physical therapist. I’m your age, and I hope to have the same impact on someone that yours has had on you…even if it’s in haiku form 😉

I was on that trip and remember the golf cart incident! Too funny. Congratulations to Aimee and the rest of you- the Rogers household loves to read about her progress. Dad (Rick Rogers) says hi!
